Uefa to rule on Reds' Israel tie

Uefa will announce on 7 August whether Liverpool have to travel to Israel for their Champions League tie with Maccabi Haifa on 22 or 23 August.

European football's governing body said on Monday that Israel could not host Uefa Cup second qualifying round games because of its conflict with Lebanon. The matches will be moved to a neutral country, with Cyprus a likely venue.

Pennant Debuts

Jermaine Pennant gave Liverpool supporters a glimpse of things to come after marking his first appearance for the club, as a second-half substitute in the friendly against Kaiserslauter (Liverpool lost 3-2).

Pennant made an instant impact by setting up both goals in an otherise pointless match. Pepe Reina played in the midfield.

Liverpool to play in Israel

Liverpool face a trip to Israel after being drawn against Maccabi Haifa in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

Uefa insists they will not put Liverpool players, fans and officials of Liverpool at risk as they face the prospect of travelling to the troubled Middle East.

Official Rob Faulkner explained: "We've asked the Israel FA and relevant authorities to give us assurances concerning safety."

Liverpool prepare for CL draw

Liverpool go into Friday's Champions League draw wary of facing a difficult tie as they battle to reach the lucrative group stages of the competition.

Following UEFA's shuffling of seeded and unseeded clubs for the third qualifying draw the two English giants - both seeded - could face the likes of unseeded Fenerbahce, Spartak Moscow, Dinamo Zagreb, Red Star Belgrade or Legia Warsaw, all of whom are expected to progress after winning their first leg, second qualifying-round games this week.

Rafa's 'risky' business

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez accepts signing Jermaine Pennant is a 'risk' and that the winger has been given his last chance at a big club.

Benitez is fully aware he has been questioned over the wisdom of signing of a player who served a prison spell last season and has had a string of problems off the field. But the Spaniard has likened the situation to his recent capture of striker Craig Bellamy.

Pennant Deal Done

'I've dreamt about this since I was a little boy so to actually be here and to be able to wear a Liverpool shirt and play at Anfield is a dream come true. I'm over the moon.

'My best will come at this club because I am playing alongside top quality players who will only help me develop my game.

'This is the best club in the country and the best club to be at so if I can't do it here then I won't be able to do it anywhere.'

Liverpool sealing Pennant deal

Birmingham's Jermaine Pennant is having a medical at Liverpool and is expected to complete a move today.

Blues revealed on Tuesday that they turned down an esarlier offer for the 23-year-old but a fee for the winger has now been agreed at a significantly higher price.

The former England Under-21 international is expected to join his new team-mates in Switzerland once the deal is finalised.

And after Rafa Benitez ends his year-long search for an elusive right winger, he'll turn his attentions to completing his major transfer business of the summer with a move for Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt. However, he still needs to cut several more players from his squad to generate additional cash for a realistic bid for Kuyt, who's valued around £10m by his Dutch club.

Mourinho's quote machine keeps rolling

Chelski boss Jose Mourinho has lamely reignited his spat with Rafa Benitez by criticising his Liverpool's counterpart's perfunctory support of Steven Gerrard's credentials to be the next England captain.

Gerrard and Chelski captain John Terry are regarded as the front-runners to be named as the Three Lions' new skipper by incoming manager Steve McClaren following David Beckham's resignation.

LFC swoop for Pennant

Liverpool are close to sealing a £6.2m swoop for Birmingham winger Jermaine Pennant, according to a report. Birmingham revealed earlier on Tuesday that they turned down a £3.5m offer for the 23-year-old from Liverpool.

Now the Press Association has been told by a source close to Blues that an improved bid has been accepted with Pennant now set for talks at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said on Monday there "could be another two players in by the weekend".

One of those now seems certain to be Pennant, and it is claimed that Holland international Dirk Kuyt will be the other - if the Reds can negotiate Feyenoord down from their £12m asking price.

Liverpool all-time table leaders
Everton lead in losses

Liverpool pipped Manchester United to top spot in an all-time league table dating back to the start of English League football and published by The Times yesterday.

According to the standings which awards three points for a win and one for a draw since the start of league football in 1888, Liverpool, who have won a record 18 titles, emerged with 5,927 points from their 3,643 matches - an average of 1.63 points a game.

Manchester United, who have won 15 titles, were second with 5,337 points from their 3,287 matches - an average of 1.62 points per game followed by Arsenal, champions 13 times, who totalled 5,780 points from 3,643 matches at 1.59 points a match.

Despite playing only 2,063 matches in the top division, Leeds United were fourth with 1.48 average points with Aston Villa fifth (1.47), Everton sixth (1.47), Tottenham Hotspur seventh (1.44), Newcastle United eighth ( 1.43), Wolverhampton Wanderers ninth (1.42) and Burnley tenth (1.41).

Chelsea, champions for the last two seasons, are 14th (average 1.39 points) and would have to total more than 90 points a season for the next 23 years to overhaul Liverpool's present average points per game.

Leyton Orient, who spent one season in the top division in 1962-63, placed 62nd and last in the list with 0.64 points a match.

Everton, founder members of the league in 1888, have played more top flight matches than any other club: 4,027 while Liverpool have won more than anyone else: 1,674. Everton also hold the record for drawn games (987) and defeats (1,402).

Alonso staying, Diao going?

Midfielder Xabi Alonso has underlined his commitment to Liverpool and says there is no truth to rumours of a move to Real Madrid.

Meanwhile colleague Salif Diao has been given permission to play for Charlton on Tuesday on trial. The 29-year-old played in the first half of Liverpool's friendly win at Crewe on Saturday and could now be on the brink of a move to the Valley.

Diao is to play for Charlton against Hibernian at Easter Road. The Senegal international spent last term on loan at Portsmouth and the previous campaign on a season-long loan at Birmingham, but both spells were affected by injury.

Gerrard focused on Liverpool glory

Steven Gerrard has vowed to put his World Cup heartache behind him and turn Liverpool into champions.

The Reds skipper was finally back in training on Monday after a month's break following England's depressing exit from Germany 2006, and is now intent on bringing back those days of constant success and taking on champions Chelsea for their crown.

Gerrard said: 'I am desperate to hold the league trophy above my head. I have still got painful memories from Germany, but the idea now is to look forward and have a good season for Liverpool.'

Mike Myers - Red!

While the penalty shootout was underway during that magical night in Istanbul, Hollywood star Mike Myers - better known as Austin Powers - left his seat at the Ataturk stadium and told fellow Liverpool fans 'I'm sorry I just cannot watch.'

However, once the Champions League trophy was won for the fifth time, Myers was one of many Liverpool fans throughout Istanbul and the world who partied the night away.

Despite being born in Ontario, Canada, in 1963 the comic genius says his offbeat humour is the legacy of his Scouse parents, Eric and Bunny who hailed from the Old Swan area of Liverpool.

"I was the only kid in Toronto to wear an olive-green Nehru jacket and support Liverpool FC."

Kuyt price not met?

Dirk Kuyt's agent has questioned Liverpool's hopes of landing the striker and insists the Holland international forward will not be moving to the English Premiership unless they meet his current club Feyenoord's valuation.

Liverpool and Newcastle are reportedly interested in the 25-year-old striker but his agent Rob Jansen believes he will remain at Feyenoord as both clubs seem unlikely to match the Eredivisie side's 20 million euros valuation of the Dutch international.

Benitez: I'll make Anfield a Fortress

Rafa claims Liverpool have put the fear factor back into trips to Anfield as he bids to topple Premiership champions Chelsea.

Liverpool's legendary stadium used to strike fear into the heart of visiting teams during their glory years in the 70s and 80s but that all changed as the club's fortunes dipped in the 90s. But Benitez believes he is on the way to making Anfield a fortress again and has warned that Liverpool will frighten the life out of their opponents at home next season.

Kuyt deal close to done? Kromkamp deal?

Liverpool are on the verge of completing the signing of Feyenoord's Holland international striker Dirk Kuyt.

Boss Rafa Benitez will finally get his man in the next 48 hours, according to the Daily Mail, after bombarding the Dutch club with a number of offers, including part-exchange deals involving Jerzy Dudek and Jan Kromkamp.

PSV Eindhoven have confirmed they are interested in signing Liverpool's Dutch international Jan Kromkamp.

The defender moved to Anfield in a swap deal with Villarreal in January but has failed to earn a regular first-team place, starting just seven games.

Champions League Seeding Announced

Liverpool will be among the top seeds for next season's Champions League but Chel$ki have again missed out.

The Premiership champions will be among the second seeds despite the absence of Italian sides Juventus and AC Milan. This raises the possibility that the side will face Barcelona at the start of the knockout round.

Each group will contain one team from the top seeds, one from the second seeds, one for the third and one from the fourth.

The draw for the group stages will take place on 24 August in Monaco.

Liverpool Transfer News

Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt is poised to finally decide his future after being linked with a move to Liverpool.

Kuyt, 25, has asked for time off to make a final decision on whether to quit the club, and recently revealed Liverpool had made an approach. Liverpool's move for Kuyt appears to depend on whether they can clinch a deal for Sevilla's Brazilian right-sided player Daniel Alves.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is also interested in the players affected by the Italian matchfixing scandal, with David Trezeguet among his targets. But the Frenchman is not the only player Benitez has been following, with reports linking Liverpool with his team-mate Mauro Camoranesi.

With Benitez also looking to off-load Salif Diao - who played in Saturday's 2-0 friendly win at Wrexham - and full-back Djimi Traore, more cash could soon be added to his transfer fund.

With regrad to the weekend's warm-up match, Rafa Benitez declared himself satisfied with Liverpool's opening pre-season fixture at Wrexham on Saturday and revealed he was particularly pleased with the strike pairing of Robbie Fowler and Craig Bellamy.

Rafa: "I will tame Bellamy"

Rafael Benitez believes playing for Liverpool will tame Wales striker Craig Bellamy.

The Anfield chief is well aware of Bellamy's reputation for off-field trouble. But Benitez believes that the fact that Cardiff-born Bellamy has achieved a boyhood dream of joining the club he has supported all his life will concentrate his mind on achieving his football goals at Liverpool.

"You could see he was a Liverpool fan and you could see he was desperate to play for us. I think this desire can be the difference between the Bellamy that we knew in the past and the Bellamy that maybe we will see in the future."

Juve, Lazio and Fiorentina relegated

Italian sides Juventus, Lazio, and Fiorentina have been relegated from Serie A as a result of the match-fixing scandal.

AC Milan have avoided relegation, but will start next season with a 15 point deficit, and have had 44 points taken from their tally for the 2005-06 season.

Juventus have been stripped of their Serie A titles for each of the last two seasons. They will start next campaign with a 30 points deficit. The team will likely seen be chnages in their squad. Coach Fabio Capello has already jumped ship for Real Madrid and their star players will no doubt be fighting each other to get through the exit door.

The corruption uncovered in Italy is bigger than anything seen in Germany, Brazil or England. It has involved collusion from some of the biggest figures and clubs in the game.

Bellamy eyes Wrexham Reds debut

Liverpool's new striker Craig Bellamy could make his debut in tomorrow's friendly at Wrexham.

Reds manager Rafael Benitez suggested that the Welsh international would play at the Racecourse, and said his signing paved the way for Djibril Cisse's exit. [ Bellamy Interview ]

Hamann on his Move

Didi Hamann has said that his decision to leave Liverpool was so he could play more football.

"I had one year left at Liverpool but it was the right time to move.

"The manager told me I was not going to play as many games as last season.

"Given that I did not play as much as I would have liked then, it was not an option to stay.

"But of course it is a wrench to leave Liverpool. I had a great time there and some successful years."

Hamann's crowning glory in the red shirt was when he played a major contribution to Liverpool's incredible comeback in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul.

At half-time, with Liverpool trailing AC Milan 3-0, Hamann replaced Steve Finnan and his presence in the midfield holding role snuffed out the threat of Brazilian playmaker Kaka as Liverpool stormed back to make it 3-3 and take the European Cup.

Dudek's Medals Returned
Thanks Merseyside Police

Jerzy Dudek today spoke of his delight after being reunited with a career's worth of footballing memorabilia - including the medal he won at the Champions League final in Istanbul.

Dudek returned from holiday in the summer to discover his home had been burgled and the robbers had made off with numerous items, including priceless medals and shirts collected during his illustrious career.

Thankfully, the Liverpool goalkeeper has now been reunited with his trophies and he's keen to thank everyone who played a part in catching the thieves.

Bolton collect Hamann 'handling fee'

Manchester City have paid compensation to Bolton to secure the services of Dietmar Hamann even though he never kicked a ball for Wanderers. The bizarre situation came to light when the former Germany midfielder was unveiled at City’s Carrington training ground by manager Stuart Pearce.

It is the latest twist in a drama which unfolded in the space of 90 minutes yesterday when initially it was stated Hamann was leaving Liverpool for Bolton.

Then the Trotters revealed his stay at the Reebok Stadium would be one of the shortest in history. Instead of joining Sam Allardyce’s men as initially agreed, the 32-year-old said he would be joining City instead.

Cisse Loan Confirmed

Marseille have confirmed that Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse has joined them on a season-long loan, with an option to make the deal permanent.

The 24-year-old striker claimed earlier this month that he was told by Liverpool his services were no longer required at Anfield.

'My choice has always been Marseille,' said the Frenchman.

Rafa backs Gerrard for England Captaincy

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has given his backing to skipper Steven Gerrard becoming the new captain of England.

With David Beckham's decision to relinquish the armband after six years following England's World Cup exit, new boss Steve McClaren will have a new skipper to appoint at the start of his reign.

Gerrard and John Terry are the two frontrunners for the position, as they have both been inspirational leaders for their club sides over the past few years.

More Moves:
Kirkland set to join Wigan

"Wigan were on today expected to confirm the signing of Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on loan.

The 25-year-old has been training with the Latics' squad and should be unveiled by manager Paul Jewell shortly.

Kirkland spent last season on loan at West Brom but lost his place because of injury and was unable to force his way past Tomasz Kuszczak on his return.

Hamann rejects switch to Bolton!

In a statement on their website, Bolton said: 'Although Didi Hamann signed a contract with the club, he has since had a change of heart.'

Manchester City have been linked with the player, and Bolton added: 'He will sign for another club within 24 hours.'

Didi's exit from Anfield is likely related to his slipping down the pecking order because of competition from Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Momo Sissoko.

Materazzi Top 5 Demolition Jobs

Materazzi fouled Florent Malouda for France's early penalty, headed Italy's equaliser, said or did something to cause Zinedine Zidane's mind to blow and then stroked home a penalty in the shoot-out.

Fifa investigates Zidane red card

Fifa is to investigate Zinedine Zidane's dramatic sending off during Sunday's World Cup final in Berlin.

The Frenchman was dismissed for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi which happened seconds after the Italian apparently insulted him.

BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried many British papers today. [ more ]

Moving Day: Cisse to Marseilles, Hamann to Bolton

A number of players moves today for the Reds. Djibril Cisse is expected to officially join Marseille on loan on Wednesday.

The striker, who was originally called up by coach Raymond Domenech for the World Cup in Germany, was forced to stay at home after breaking his right leg during France's 3-1 win in a friendly against China on June 7.

The Club has also confirmed that stalwart Didi Hamann is headed to Bolton. Hamann's decision to leave the Reds brings to an end a glorious seven year spell on Merseyside during which he played an inspirational role in bringing a succession of top honours to the club.

Known as 'The Kaiser' by his Anfield team-mates, Hamann was signed by Gerard Houllier from Newcastle United for £8 million in July 1999 and quickly became a fans favourite.

He went on to make 283 appearances for Liverpool scoring 11 goals. In 2002 Hamann became the first Liverpool player since Roger Hunt in 1966 to play in a World Cup Final.

Thanks Didi! You'll be remembered in our hearts!

On the World Cup Final

Italy beat France 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out to win the World Cup after a 1-1 draw in Berlin. Fabio Grosso scored the winning penalty after France's David Trezeguet missed.

Playing his last game before retiring, Zinedine Zidane's career ended in disgrace after he was sent off for crazily headbutting Marco Materazzi. Zidane had put France ahead early on with a coolly-taken chipped penalty, before Materazzi levelled with a header from an Andrea Pirlo corner.

The result caps an incredible period for Italian football, with the domestic game embroiled in a corruption scandal similar to 1982 when they last won the World Cup.

Despite his bizarre on pitch actions, Zinedine Zidane won the Golden Ball award for the World Cup's best player. French captain Zidane polled 2,012 points in the vote by journalists mostly carried out at half-time.

'The Club has noted the considerable press speculation regarding the foot problem suffered by Harry Kewell while playing for Australia in this summer's World Cup Finals.

Gary Ablett joins Reds as Coach

Gary Ablett has joined Liverpool as the
new coach of the Reserve Team

Having moved from Liverpool to Everton as a player in the 1990s, Ablett will kick off the 2006-07 campaign as Anfield's reserve team manager, and he hopes the reverse switch is not accompanied by the same storm which greeted his decision to cross the park in January 1992.

More signings on cards for Reds

The Reds mights beback in training for just three days, but Rafa has already added four new faces in the squad and more are expected to come.

Rafa yesterday confirmed Chile winger Mark Gonzalez has been granted a work permit, with Brazilian full-back Fabio Aurelio also completing his free transfer move from Valencia yesterday.

And it is unlikely to stop there. Benitez is believed to be back in the hunt for Real Betis winger Joaquin (a move which Parry disputes), with Feyenoord's striker Dirk Kuyt and Birmingham winger Jermaine Pennant also on his list.

Gonzalez gets Permit

Liverpool have successfully obtained a work permit for winger Mark Gonzalez after the Chilean's application last year failed.

Benitez, determined to bring the youngster to Anfield, was forced to place the player with Real Sociedad last season to keep Gonzalez fit and in match practice.

Rafa expects Gonzalez to prove a popular player at Anfield: "This is very good news for us and I am absolutely delighted to welcome Mark to Liverpool as he is a player the supporters will like to see.

"Mark is an exciting left winger who can cross good balls and beat defenders and he is a very good signing for us."

Rafa signs defender Paletta

Benitez has praised his latest acquisition, Argentinian defender Gabriel Paletta, after he signed a four-year contract.

Having agreed to join Liverpool from Atletico Banfield in February, the 20-year-old Argentina under-21s international tied up the transfer yesterday.

Liverpool manager Benitez is delighted to have secured Paletta's services, comparing him to Anfield stalwart Jamie Carragher and veteran Argentina defender Roberto Ayala.

Said Benitez of Paletta: "If you're talking about Liverpool, he's more like Carra than Sami Hyypia. This is good because we will have a balance in the style of defenders. He is a defender with a lot of aggression and we're sure he has a great future."

Juventus Dealt a Double Blow

The prosecutors in Italy's soccer scandal trial are seeking to demote Juventus, the reigning champion, from the country's top league to the third tier and strip the team of two league titles.

Two other top-four finishers of last season, AC Milan and Fiorentina, could be demoted to the second-tier league, as could Lazio for its alleged role in a match-fixing scandal.

Further troubling Juventus was the resignation of its coach, Fabio Capello, who announced Tuesday that he would be leaving Juventus to coach Real Madrid next season.

On Tuesday, the third day of hearings before a sports tribunal in Rome, the lead prosecutor, Stefano Palazzi, outlined a package of penalties that was in line with the harshest of expectations.

Gerrard Unimpressed

Steven Gerrard has launched a verbal attack on Cristiano Ronaldo for rushing up to the referee to make sure Wayne Rooney was sent off.

Ronaldo and Rooney are team-mates at Manchester United but there was no friendship on show in Gelsenkirchen.

The Portugal winger sprinted towards referee Horatio Elizondo shouting: "Did you see that?" after Rooney had raked his studs into Ricardo Carvalho.

Gerrard said: "I saw that, and if it was one of my team-mates I'd be absolutely disgusted in him because there's no need for that.

"I've seen Ronaldo going over giving the card and I think he's bang out of order."

Bellamy charged with assault

New Liverpool signing Craig Bellamy has been charged with assaulting a teenage girl in an alleged nightclub bust-up.

The Wales striker, who has just signed a £6m four-year deal with the Premiership side, is facing two counts of assault after a 19-year-old from Barry claimed the player struck her in a Cardiff club.

Bellamy later voluntarily went to Cardiff Central Police Station where he was arrested and released on bail.

Last night, South Wales Police confirmed Bellamy had been charged following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.

A police spokeswoman said: "A 26-year-old man has been charged with two counts of Section 39 assault. He was charged after answering his bail on Friday morning. No court date has yet been fixed."

World Cup 2006 |
Sven's Experiments End

England bowed out of the World Cup, thus ending the Sven soap opera that had spanned five-and-a-half tumultuous years.

From unthinkable 5-1 wins over Germany to fake sheikhs and high-profile affairs, the reign of "Svennis", as he is better known in Sweden, has had just about everything... bar silverware.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's side fought valiantly with 10 men following Wayne Rooney's dismissal in the 62nd minute of a 0-0 quarter-final draw in Gelsenkirchen.

But Scolari's team eventually prevailed 3-1 after an agonising penalty shootout in which England missed three out of four spot-kicks.
