Wembley Construction Blues

The Football Association has confirmed another delay in the Wembley project after revealing all matches planned for 2006 will be moved to other venues.

Work on the stadium will not be completed in time for an England friendly in August and two Euro 2008 qualifiers in September and October. Instead, the completion date will be at least the end of September - a year later than the original deadline.

The building of the stadium has suffered numerous problems, with a roof beam collapsing last week, resulting in building work being cancelled for a day.
There have also been problems with underground sewer pipes at the stadium and workers were sent home on Tuesday after disputes over pay and threats of redundancy.

No Return for Kirkland

Liverpool have closed the door on Chris Kirkland returning to Anfield early following his latest injury setback - a broken finger that puts him out for the rest of the season.

Rather than invite Kirkland to return to Melwood for treatment, Liverpool have made it clear they're not expecting to see the keeper on Merseyside until his one-year loan spell ends.

Liverpool are under no obligation to take the player back and increase their wage bill, just because his season is over. Rafa's unsentimental approach may be another clear indication he sees no prospect of Kirkland forcing his way back into his long-term plans at Anfield.

The Reds hope Kirkland's loan move to West Brom will become permanent during the summer, allowing the club to recoup part of the £6m fee they paid in 2001.

More on Liverpool Takeover talks

It is long established fact that the board wants new investment into the club.

To this end, the club's advisers said chairman David Moores might sell some of his majority stake for the right level of funds.

It is looking to fund a £170m ground move and is also keen to raise cash to help it bring in new players and take on the financial power of Chelsea and Manchester United.

When you consider that Manchester United is making up to £3m more in match revenues per game than Liverpool, and when you multiply that by 17 games, then it shows how far behind Liverpool is falling in that source of income.

Reuters cited an unnamed source close to the situation as saying that Liverpool's board expected a share valuation of about £200m ($348.5m).

Reds Takeover?

Liverpool Press Release

"The board of Liverpool FC has noted the recent press speculation concerning possible third-party investment into the club and can confirm that it is continuing discussions with a number of parties regarding a potential investment of new funds into the club,' read a club statement.

Although the structure of any such investment is uncertain, it may include an offer for the entire share capital of the club.

Shareholders will be kept updated as appropriate."

Liverpool 3, Everton 1 - the Story

It was a dramatic and traumatic start in the 17th minute of the match - Steven Gerrard is sent off with two quick yellow cards. The visitors might have been expected to capitalise on the early expulsion of Gerrard, as the Liverpool captain took down Kevin Kilbane barely a minute after being cautioned for kicking the ball away.

Yet rather than encourage an Everton side who had began the game the brighter, the dismissal served only to galvanise the home side into a wonderful football display.

Blues commenting on the match afterwards acknowledged that Everton never came to terms with the absence of Mikel Areta. As Moyes later conceded, Arteta's composure had been sorely missed.

Rafa's side were undoubtedly aided by the timing of key events on Saturday. Neville's own goal opener came in first-half injury time and was followed two minutes after the break by a second from Luis Garcia, and after a shellshocked Everton gave themselves a flicker of hope with Tim Cahill's header just past the hour, it was extinguished by van der Meyde's red card five minutes after the Dutchman had arrived from the bench as the visitors sought an unlikely equaliser.

All in all, it made for an exciting, absorbing spectacle, with the best of what football could be played between the flurry of yellow and red cards coming from Liverpool.

Pepe going to World Cup?

Spain coach Luis Aragones has dropped a huge hint that Pepe Reina will be rewarded for an excellent first season in the Premiership with a place in his country's World Cup squad.

Reina has settled easily into English football and has seen off the challenge of Jerzy Dudek and Scott Carson to make the number one position his own since his summer move from Villarreal.

Liverpool SEVEN!

Liverpool have secured their place in the final four of this season's FA Cup with a magnificent 7-0 victory over Birmingham City tonight.

It was all too easy for Liverpool who showed no ill effects from playing at Newcastle only 48 hours ago as they put Steve Bruce's men to the sword with a fine display of attacking football which resulted in the Reds' biggest ever FA Cup victory away from Anfield.

The manner in which Liverpool embarrassed Birmingham defensively will leave huge question marks over the ability of Steve Bruce side's to stay in the Premiership.
