Hamann on his Move

Didi Hamann has said that his decision to leave Liverpool was so he could play more football.

"I had one year left at Liverpool but it was the right time to move.

"The manager told me I was not going to play as many games as last season.

"Given that I did not play as much as I would have liked then, it was not an option to stay.

"But of course it is a wrench to leave Liverpool. I had a great time there and some successful years."

Hamann's crowning glory in the red shirt was when he played a major contribution to Liverpool's incredible comeback in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul.

At half-time, with Liverpool trailing AC Milan 3-0, Hamann replaced Steve Finnan and his presence in the midfield holding role snuffed out the threat of Brazilian playmaker Kaka as Liverpool stormed back to make it 3-3 and take the European Cup.
