Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso helped ensure Spain's World Cup campaign got off to the best possible start with his country's opening goal in today's 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine in Leipzig.

The Spanish side strolled to an easy opening day victory which sets them up nicely to qualify from Group H and take their place in the second round of the competition with easier looking games against Saudia Arabia and Tunisia still to come.
